At Evarts Tremaine, we like to spotlight our team members to give an inside look at their everyday routines.
This month, we are highlighting Charlene Deininger. Charlene is an Account Executive in our Personal Insurance Division.
What does a typical day look like for you?
A good day for me always starts with coffee! I am new in my role and still learning, but I’ll typically start out by checking emails and my to-do list to see where to begin the day and go from there. Providing great service to clients is always my number one goal so I focus on getting tasks completed and responding to clients in a timely manner. After work I like to relax, maybe cook or go out for dinner, and eventually make my way to the couch with my dog Buddy to read or watch Netflix. I like having a job where I interact a lot with people, but at the end of the day I enjoy some quiet time to unwind and get myself ready for the next day.
How did you get started in the insurance industry?
I feel like my story is not unique in that it kind of just happened. I worked in higher education as an academic adviser for about 5 years and chose to leave that field to find a better fit. About a year later I was working part-time and doing side hustles, and it was time to start figuring out what I wanted to do full-time. I accepted a position with a State Farm agent, got licensed, tried sales for a year, decided I was much better at client services than I am at sales, and here I am. Insurance wasn’t necessarily the plan, but as I used to tell my students, sometimes the path isn’t clear and you may have to try a few things to find the right fit.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
When I was growing up I never really had a dream job but more of an overall goal of doing something that helped people. Helping people is by far the best part of my job.
When you are not working, what are your favorite hobbies?
I enjoy anything that is going to help me grow and focus on positivity. I love reading and have been fitting it in more these days. I am really into self-development books and YouTube videos on organization and self-improvement. I recently read “Conquest of the Mind” by Eknath Easwaran and learned how changing and controlling our thoughts will help us achieve our goals and live better lives. I also love to watch Netflix and try new local places to eat with friends and family.
What is one thing you would like people to know about the insurance industry?
When switching careers a few years ago I was set on finding something that kept me interested, learning, and growing. Insurance checks all of those boxes and I am so grateful to have found my career.
